The Pittsburgh Pirates were originally called the Alleghenys in the 1880s but became the Pirates in 1891. They got their name from a newspaper report that the team had poached players from the Philadelphia Athletics and the name Pirates stuck. The Pirates play in the National League in the Central Division, although they previously played in the East Division from 1969 to 1993. They have played at PNC Park since 2001 after moving from Three Rivers Stadium. Their colors are black, gold and white.
The Pirates have had periods of success. They won three successive NL Pennants from 1901 and captured their first World Series in 1909. There were four more world titles in 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979, but since then postseason action has been scarce. Three consecutive East Division titles from 1990 did not bring any further success nor did Wild Cards in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
